Kat Sakata Design

Led by the Executive Office of Early Learning, Hawaii P-20 Partnerships for Education launched a campaign called 55 by '25. The campaign works towards raising awareness in achieving Hawaii's educational goal: 55 percent of working age adults (25 – 64 years old) having a two- or four-year degree by the year 2025.

They help to strengthen the education pipeline from early childhood to higher education so that students can achieve a successful career. 

Design Asylum was tasked to create a website providing the community with a variety of tools and articles to spread the word. The site is to also act as a central educational hub where people can pledge their support.

This project was especially interesting to me, as I have never worked on a website with overwhelming content that would grow overtime.

A friend and I started a fun project together called LINOxchnge where we bridge the gap between Seattle & San Francisco through designed postcards. Every week, we take turns sending one to each other. It's our creative outlet when we have free time.

Waikiki Health is medical clinic who provides care that is accessible and affordable to the people of Hawaii.

They approached Design Asylum to help redesign their identity and overall look and feel. My role in this project was to help create and build their responsive website so that it may be reached to members and future members of their community.

For so long, I've always wanted to design a coaster — whether it was for a client, something fun for my friends, or a gift item to pass around the holidays. That opportunity never came along. If the opportunity doesn't come knock'in, then build a door right? This became a side project that I would work on when I had time.

I thought back to those nights with my friends. There always seemed to be a wine-drinker, a whiskey-drinker, the martini-drinker and the oh so "shot, shot, shot, shot, shot, shot" drinker. Every drink identifying each individual.

Every year, the AAF American Advertising Awards District 13 holds a competition known as the Pele Awards, recognizing the best in advertising and design in Hawaii. Categories include: Public Service, Interactive Media, Print, Television, and more.

Every year, hundreds of pieces are submitted in hopes that one designer, one company or organization will win the creative spirit of excellence in advertising.

In 2012, Design Asylum was approached to come up with the concept/theme surrounding the competition. That same year was the 2012 Summer Olympics held in London, which seemed to tie in perfectly!

Once we decided that the 2012 Pele Awards would be themed around the Summer Olympics, we created all the collateral and interactive components. This consisted of a new logo, tickets, invitations, program, website and slideshow template to display all the gold, silver and bronze winners.

A very multi-level project involving the entire creative and development team.

Early 2014, I went to San Francisco for a quick one week trip. In preparation, I began searching the web for graphic design stores I could go to in search for goodies like Field Notes, calligraphic pens, desk supplies, sketchbooks, etc. No matter how much I searched, I couldn't find a single store that had the "stamp of approval" where other San Francisco designers enjoyed shopping from. The only way I found such stores was through the good old fashion word-of-mouth. Here is the idea of Me Likey.

Me Likey is an app concept I had where the community would help identify the best stores (depending on what you're looking for) near by. Based on users likes, check-ins, and items sold would increase it's recognition. With high recognition, other users like myself could travel to a city and instantly find stores best matched to their liking. 

This is still a working concept.

H-1 F+N Design-Build Collaborative is a architecture firm dedicated to creating uniquely integrated construction with design and architectural practice. They pride themselves on their process of design and building.

They have been in business for over 20 years now with experience in a range of projects from new homes, kitchens, to commercial tenant spaces.

They approached Design Asylum to help build their website — to showcase their work. As one of the designers and developers on this projects, I assisted with front-end development and the portfolio page design.

Exhibit for NOAA Inouye Regional Center (IRC) located on Ford Island, Honolulu. The IRC is headquartered to programs within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) who do extensive research on issues within the pacific islands. Those issues include: fishery, ocean, coastal, climate, and the atmosphere.

Startup Weekend is a 54 hr event involving community members of all industries to come together during a weekend and build their business idea. Members included: designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and marketers.

In 2013, I was fortunate enough to serve as their Marketing Chair where I helped to create marketing collateral to advertise the event and expand brand awareness.

A good friend of mine decided that she's moving to Seattle to continue her design career. When she told me the news, I was really excited for her because I knew she would kick-ass there.

Her flight date was coming up quickly and I wanted to give her a super awesome going away present to remind her that no matter what struggles she encountered, she would succeed, like she has done over and over again. It's always difficult leaving home to pursue your dreams and I could see that it was starting to get to her, like it would anyone else. That's when I decided to make this poster, so she could bring it up to Seattle in hopes to remind herself that she got this. 

Additional to the poster, I made postcard sizes too!

Dareshare is a mobile social gaming app that brings photos and dares together.

The idea behind Dareshare is to take daring photographs of silly, embarrassing and awkward moments and post it to share with your friends. When you sign up, you can look to see what dares your friends are doing, see who made it to the trending page, look at your own profile of past dares you've done, and most importantly, play DareShare. 

On the play screen, you can select between various dares. If you don't know the dare, that's ok. Select it to see posts by other people. When you're ready, hit the camera button and begin taking your photo. Once you're done, post it!

You'll also have the ability to comment, share, like and/or dislike a photo.

I had a lot of fun being the designer on this app. I was able to be part of a team who was involved in every step of the way. From the immediate brain storming stages to development, I assisted in the app flow, functionality, building the content strategy, user testing, video, wireframes, and design.

Sake Poster
Poster concept for an annual sake event held in Hawaii highlighting the love affair of sake dating back to Japanese immigration times. Previous years included poster designs focused on typography. I loved that idea, so I decided to stick with it but this time introducing 2D type. In the end, this concept wasn't chosen so I here's a sneak peek.
